The APSmart RSD-S-PLC is a single-input Rapid Shutdown Device designed to meet NEC 2017, 2020, and 2023 Section 690.12 requirements for module-level rapid shutdown on residential and commercial solar installations. Using Power Line Communication (PLC), it shuts down the array automatically when the transmitter signal is lost or the AC breaker is switched off - bringing panel-level voltage to safe levels within seconds. Also SunSpec certified for broad compatibility.

Rated for up to 15A continuous input current and 1000V/1500V system voltage, the RSD-S-PLC is built for reliable outdoor performance with a NEMA 6P / IP68 enclosure and an operating range of -40F to +185F. It uses industry-standard Stubli MC4 connectors for straightforward integration into any string or microinverter system.

Key Features

  • NEC 690.12 Compliant - Meets NEC 2017, 2020, and 2023 rapid shutdown requirements
  • SunSpec Certified - Maintains normal function via continuous heartbeat signal from APSmart Transmitter
  • PLC Communication - Triggers shutdown when transmitter signal is absent or AC breaker is off
  • Dual Input - Accepts two panel inputs per device
  • NEMA 6P / IP68 Rated - Fully weatherproof for rooftop installations
  • Stubli MC4 Connectors - Compatible with standard solar wiring
  • Wide Temperature Range - Operates from -40F to +185F
  • UL 1741 Listed - Certified to UL 1741, CSA C22.2 No. 330-17, IEC/EN62109-1, and 2PFG2305

Frequently Asked Questions

What is rapid shutdown and why is it required?

Rapid shutdown (RSD) is an NEC code requirement (Section 690.12) that allows emergency responders to de-energize a solar array quickly and safely. It is required on most new residential and commercial installations in the U.S. under NEC 2017, 2020, and 2023.

How does PLC-based rapid shutdown work?

Power Line Communication (PLC) sends a continuous heartbeat signal from the APSmart Transmitter to each RSD device on the roof. When that signal is lost - either from a power outage or the AC breaker being switched off - each device shuts down its panel to safe voltage levels within seconds.

Is the RSD-S-PLC compatible with my inverter?

The RSD-S-PLC works with any system using a compatible APSmart PLC transmitter. If the inverter includes an integrated SunSpec-certified transmitter, the external transmitter can be removed. Contact us at (346) 432-4228 to confirm compatibility before purchasing.

How many RSD-S-PLC units do I need?

One unit is required per panel (or per two panels, as this device accepts dual inputs). For a standard 20-panel system, you would need 10 units. Your installer can confirm the exact count based on your system layout.

Is professional installation required?

Yes - rapid shutdown devices must be installed by a licensed solar professional to ensure NEC compliance. Solwel can connect you with certified local installers in the Houston and Dallas area. Reach out at info@solwel.com or (346) 432-4228.
